The Stages of Production at the Charolles Earthenware Factory

Les Étapes de Fabrication à la Faïencerie de Charolles

For centuries, the Faïencerie de Charolles has perpetuated a unique expertise, where each piece is crafted with care and passion. Discover the different manufacturing stages that transform a simple clay into a refined work of art.

1. The Production of Plaster Molds

It all begins with the creation of plaster molds, crafted by hand with precision. These molds are essential because they allow the earthenware pieces to be shaped and guarantee a faithful reproduction of the original models.

2. The Casting of the Earth

Once the molds are ready, the liquid clay is delicately poured inside. This operation requires great skill to ensure even distribution of the material and avoid air bubbles that could weaken the piece.

3. Thickness Formation

The clay then rests in the mold for several hours, allowing sufficient thickness to form naturally on the walls. The excess clay is then emptied, leaving the piece in production.

4. Air Drying

Once the desired thickness is achieved, the molds are opened and the pieces are left to air dry. This step is crucial to prevent any warping or cracking during subsequent firings.

5. Hand Finishing

Once the piece is completely dry, it is meticulously reworked by hand or with a knife. This phase allows for the refinement of details and the elimination of any imperfections before the first firing.

6. The First Baking: Obtaining the “Biscuit”

The pieces then pass through a high-temperature kiln for an initial firing. This process transforms the clay into a baked, porous material, called a "biscuit," which will serve as the base for the following steps.

7. Coloring

Next comes the application of the color, carried out with a slip gun. This technique ensures even coverage and highlights the nuances of each piece, while allowing the craftsmanship to shine through.

8. The Second Firing: Fixing the Enamel

After coloring, a second firing is necessary to fix the enamel and give the piece its final appearance, shiny or matte depending on the chosen finishes.

9. The Object is Complete!

After careful quality control, the item is ready to join the Charolles Faïencerie collections. Each creation is unique and demonstrates the unparalleled expertise of the artisan potters.

Thanks to these many handcrafted steps, each piece of earthenware becomes an authentic and timeless work of art. An exceptional craft that perpetuates tradition while renewing itself with creativity.
